Howrah, August 14: A brace by Marcus Joseph and another goal by Kerala boy Shibil Muhammed secured second win for Gokulam Kerala FC in their Group ‘D’ match against Indian Air Force, 3-0, at Howrah Stadium here on Wednesday.
Gokulam’s captain Marcus Joseph, who scored a hat-trick against Chennaiyin FC in the opening match, continued his scoring streak with a mesmerizing opener and another in the 87 th minute to make it five goals from two matches.
The other goal was scored by Malappuram lad Shibil Muhammed, who was promoted from the reserve team this season. Gokulam started without their Ugandan striker Henry Kisekka as he was injured in the training.
The match started in an equal note as both the teams played fast and intense football. Air Force missed a sitter in the opening 15 minutes whereas Marcus created several chances for Gokulam to give an entertaining start for the match.
Slowly Air Force started to dominate the match but Gokulam captain Marcus rose to the occasion by scoring a wonderful goal in the 43 rd minute to give a much-needed lead for the Malabarians. He receiving the ball from the midfield found the net with a superb long-ranger.
The goal gave Gokulam advantage and they started the second half on a high note. Marcus created the second goal also as his shot on target rebounded off Shibinraj to Shibil Muhammed who slotted home from right side of the post to make it 2-0.
Air Force tried to score but Gokulam defenders Irshad T and Andre Ettienne warded off the threats. During their build-up, Air Force defenders made a mistake as Marcus intercepted a pass and ran with the ball to score past Shibinraj to make it 3-0.
Gokulam Kerala FC face TRAU FC in their third and last match in Group ‘D’ on August 18.
